The North American Field Guide to Providence Music Pt. I

This is a brief overview of bands that are making a name for themselves in Providence, obviously there are MANY MANY more to this, and often play shows with them. If you like the ones below, go out to a show and support them!

LIGHTNING BOLT
-From the Olneyville/Fort Thunder (RIP) scene, this Drum and Bass noise-rock duo have become a well-known band internationally (They recently came back from a European tour, and actually were kicked out of Japan for visa problems. They are currently on Load Records, based out of Providence. Their most recent album "Hypermagic Mountain" has received numerous positive reviews from Allmusic
Tiny Mix Tapes and Stylus Magazine.

MAHI MAHI
-This dance duo consisted of V.Von Ricci (Keyboards/vocals) and Sir VIZIO (Drums+Electronics) has influences of Kraftwerk, Yello, and Joy Division to their sound. All samples are triggered live and on the fly at their shows, no sequencers or backing tracks used at all. They currently have two albums out, He No Wa and (re)Move Your Body, both out on Corleone Records, as well as an Untitled third album due to drop in 2009.

TRIANGLE FOREST
-Electro trio based out of Providence, winners of the WBRU Rock Hunt and one of the most reverby bands ever. Made up of Brendan Britton, Ben Britton and Xiaojue Hu, they will stop at nothing to satisfy your love of dance.

The Chinese Stars
-Born out of the end of the notable band Arab On Radar
, The Chinese Stars are one of the current bands at the top of the Dance/Punk label. Featuring Craig Kureck, Eric Paul, V. Von Ricci and Paul Vieira. Dissonant guitar parts over disturbing spoken word/singing under groove filled bass parts and minimal funk drums.

In the beginning...

This blog will be a resource for my radio show "Fear Of Music" on WRIU with some articles focusing on Providence/Rhode Island/New England local music. Its goal is to help these bands find people, even if it's just one or two, that will appreciate their music. Expect record reviews, blurbs, show reviews, photos and general musical musings. Also, I will post play lists from each one of my shows.

Be sure to check back every week.
